Ex-Advisor to Fittler Cuts Down James Tedesco’s Chances of Blues Comeback

Former NSW Blues adviser Greg Alexander has put an end to James Tedesco’s aspiration to return for the State of Origin, asserting that Dylan Edwards will be the selected fullback under new coach Laurie Daley. Alexander, who previously worked closely with Tedesco when he was captain and starting fullback, has backed Edwards, despite the latter’s struggles with both injuries and form this season, which has seen the Penrith Panthers falter with only three wins from nine matches.

Tedesco was replaced by Edwards last year, a decision that proved successful when the Blues clinched the series 2-1. However, many believed Tedesco, a previous star player, still had a chance at a comeback. In a recent SEN radio show, Alexander expressed confidence in Edwards’ role, calling him a “certainty” for selection. He also listed several other players he believes are assured of a spot, including Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, and Angus Crichton, despite some facing injuries.

Interestingly, Alexander deemed last year’s winning captain, Jake Trbojevic, unlikely to be included in this year’s squad. He also suggested Newcastle’s Jacob Saifiti may secure the front-row position over in-form Terrell May. Additionally, Alexander mentioned that Api Koroisau is applying pressure on incumbent hooker Reece Robson to retain his role.

Scott Sattler, a former Panthers player, believes that Edwards’ selection may hinge on the halfback situation. If Cleary remains in the No. 7 jersey, Sattler is confident Edwards will retain his fullback spot, but if Mitchell Moses replaces Cleary, it could open the door for Tedesco or Tom Trbojevic.

With the squad announcement scheduled for after round 11 of the NRL, the pressure is mounting as discussions continue regarding player selections and team combinations for a successful campaign in the upcoming State of Origin series.
