A new regulatory standard concerning furniture safety has come into effect as of May 4, aimed at reducing the risks associated with toppling furniture. Suppliers are now mandated to provide safety warnings regarding the dangers of unstable furniture, which is crucial for protecting consumers, particularly the most vulnerable groups, such as young children and the elderly.

Catriona Lowe, deputy chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), emphasised the importance of this initiative in preventing injuries and fatalities linked to falling furniture. The regulations require suppliers to display hazard warnings both in-store and online, attach permanent warning labels to their products, and provide safety instructions for proper assembly and secure anchoring.

Businesses that fail to comply with these new requirements may face hefty penalties, amounting to as much as $2.5 million for individuals and $50 million for corporations. The ACCC is committed to enforcing these regulations, collaborating with state consumer agencies to ensure compliance and take action against violators.

Statistically, more than 900 Australians are injured each year due to toppling furniture, necessitating medical attention. Tragically, since the year 2000, at least 28 individuals, including 17 children under the age of five, have lost their lives in Australia as a result of such incidents. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for heightened safety measures.

Consumers are encouraged to pay close attention to warning labels on furniture and to manage the placement of heavy items thoughtfully to mitigate potential hazards.
