In a dramatic qualifying session for the Miami sprint race, McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were bested by Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, who made history by clinching pole position at just 18 years old—the youngest driver ever to achieve this feat in Formula One. Antonelli recorded an impressive lap time of 1:26.482, securing the front spot on the grid as the McLaren duo settled for second and third places.
Expressing his elation, Antonelli shared, “It was a very intense qualifying,” adding that he felt confident leading into the session and was thrilled to earn his first pole. This incredible achievement comes on the heels of him becoming the youngest driver to lead an F1 race just weeks earlier, breaking a record held by Max Verstappen.
McLaren’s boss, Zak Brown, has confirmed that the team will refrain from imposing any internal hierarchy between Piastri and Norris, allowing the drivers to race freely. This decision comes amidst a budding championship rivalry, with Piastri showcasing impressive form by winning three of the first five races this season, while Norris sits just ten points behind with one victory. Brown remarked, “Let ’em race,” affirming that both drivers will receive equal treatment until one emerges as a clear frontrunner.
Norris reflected on his previous victory in Miami and expressed admiration for Antonelli’s success. He acknowledged his own recent struggles but remained optimistic about regaining his competitive edge, noting, “The speed is there… I just need to tidy up.” He dismissed concerns about Piastri’s momentum, emphasising it’s a long season ahead.
The atmosphere within the McLaren team is buoyant as both drivers aim to enhance their standings as the championship progresses, with no doubt that the competition will only intensify as the season unfolds.
