The regulations regarding the conversion of international driving licences to Australian licences have been updated as of today. This change particularly affects the “Experienced Driver Recognition status,” which was previously applicable for many international licence holders. This status has now expired in all Australian states and territories, with the exception of Western Australia and Queensland.

As a result, temporary visitors from certain countries may find it necessary to take additional driving tests to convert their international licences into Australian ones, while others may not need to. For instance, drivers from Bulgaria, Hong Kong, South Africa, and several Eastern European nations will now be required to undertake these tests.

Conversely, visitors from countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, and various EU member states — which hold federal Recognition Status — will not need to complete any extra assessments to obtain an Australian driver’s licence.

It is important to note that travellers planning to stay in Australia for less than six months can continue to use their valid international driving licences in most states without the need for conversion.

In line with this new process, applications for motorcycle and car licences have been separated. Additionally, those holding Recognition Status will be reassessed every five years to ensure compliance with Australian road safety standards.
