Former Triple J host Alex Dyson has identified significant vulnerabilities in the traditionally secure Liberal seat of Wannon in south-west Victoria, where he stands as an independent candidate. Over two previous elections, Dyson has notably reduced the margin against incumbent Dan Tehan to a mere 3.5 per cent, and recent polls suggest he may even lead by just over one per cent in the upcoming federal election.

In an interview with 9news.com.au, Dyson expressed optimism while emphasising his connection to the locals, both small-town residents and farmers, who he believes have long felt overlooked. He aims to represent all constituents and highlight their needs, especially as it may take only 500 votes to shift the outcome in Wannon this year. Dyson has pledged to address the pressing housing crisis but has faced scrutiny over his own property investments, owning five homes and a small business. In defence, he maintains transparency about his financial journey and insists he aims to advocate for affordable rental options rather than perpetuate systemic disadvantages.

Climate policy is also a critical issue in the region, as voters express their concern over environmental matters. Dyson, supported by Climate 200, criticises both major parties for politicising climate change, promising to tackle urgent climate issues while concurrently addressing cost-of-living challenges.

Tehan, who has held the Wannon seat since 2010, focuses his campaign on promoting small business interests and pledges funds for local initiatives, including a significant upgrade to Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway. Dyson, however, has expressed disappointment with Tehan’s voting history regarding rural issues, suggesting that the MP’s adherence to party lines has hindered support for the region.

Despite his past electoral defeats, Dyson, who became a notable figure during his stint on Triple J from 2010 to 2016, remains undeterred. His determination has only intensified with each campaign. This election cycle has seen him canvassing extensively, knocking on over 20,000 doors and engaging with the community about the changes they wish to see. As election day approaches, he reflects on the hard work invested, hopeful for a shift in representation that truly embodies the voice of Wannon’s residents.
