Independent MP Monique Ryan stepped in to diffuse a tense situation when far-right activists disrupted a political forum in Melbourne’s south-east. The forum, held at Kew Library, featured candidates Ryan, Clive Crosby from Labor, and Jackie Carter from the Greens, who were discussing media issues with local residents.

Three men, including Matt Trihey from the National Workers Alliance, entered the meeting, vocally questioning the candidates about immigration and crime. Video footage captured Trihey, who has previously been linked to the white nationalist group the Lad’s Society, shouting incoherently and dismissing attempts from attendees to escort him out. Amid rising tensions, a woman in the audience confronted Trihey, attempting to punch him, which prompted another woman and Ryan to intervene and pull her back.

Ryan recounted her concern for the woman’s safety, describing her as frail compared to the larger Trihey. She promptly moved the woman away from potential harm and sought assistance from another audience member.

As the activists were eventually escorted from the library, they taunted the attendees, with Trihey remarking, “Have a wonderful day, yeah. I hope I haven’t spoiled your evening, guys. I just want answers on who’s going to act on crime.”

Victoria Police arrived shortly after 6:30 PM, engaging with the individuals but stating that no formal complaints were filed at that time, although the investigation remains ongoing.

Ryan later expressed her disappointment about the disruption and its impact on the older members of the audience, many of whom were understandably shaken. She characterised the activists’ behaviour as threatening and highlighted the unfortunate distraction it caused during a significant local discussion.

Local media have reached out to Ryan, Crosby, and Carter for their perspectives on the incident.
