Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a ceasefire for Easter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported numerous violations on Sunday. He noted that Ukrainian forces experienced 59 cases of shelling and five assaults from Russian troops, along with various drone strikes. In a post on social media platform X, Zelenskyy remarked that while Russia aims to project an image of a ceasefire, they continue to carry out targeted offensives against Ukraine.
Zelenskyy commented on the paradox of the situation, suggesting that either Putin lacks full control over his military or that the Russian leadership is insincere in their intentions to genuinely pursue peace. He asserted that the increasing tempo of Russian attacks since the ceasefire announcement indicates a lack of commitment to ending hostilities.
While Zelenskyy acknowledged that some regions seemed quieter, he emphasised that the ceasefire should be fully respected by Russia. He reiterated Ukraine’s offer to extend the truce for an additional 30 days, starting at midnight on Sunday, stating that the proposal “remains on the table” and that Ukraine would respond according to developments on the ground.
After expressing his relief that no air raid sirens went off on Easter morning, he highlighted that if Putin indeed dialled back the violence, it would reveal him as the principal aggressor in the conflict. Yet, reports from Russian-installed officials in Kherson indicated that Ukrainian forces were still conducting attacks, indicating ongoing tensions despite the ceasefire declaration.
Shortly after announcing the ceasefire, Putin was seen attending an Easter service in Moscow, where he was supported by Patriarch Kirill. The Kremlin stated that the ceasefire was meant to last from 6 PM Moscow time on Saturday to midnight on Easter Sunday. However, details about monitoring the ceasefire or addressing ongoing air and ground confrontations remained vague.
This ceasefire announcement came on the heels of U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia were nearing a critical juncture, as he encouraged efforts to conclude the prolonged conflict.
In summary, while the Easter ceasefire was announced, ongoing Ukrainian reports of attacks and Zelenskyy’s assertions regarding Russian military activities suggest that the situation remains delicate, with skepticism regarding Russia’s genuine commitment to peace.
