A search is currently being conducted for a group of schoolchildren who buried a time capsule in 1985, marking the 10-year anniversary of Telstra, then known as Telecom. The event took place in Adelaide, South Australia, where the children, all celebrating their 10th birthdays on July 1, contributed various items to the capsule, which is due to be uncovered 40 years later.
Telstra hopes to locate the nine remaining participants from this historic event, as only one member of the group has been successfully found so far. Michael Patterson, the regional general manager of Telstra, has called on Australians to assist in tracking down these individuals. He noted that the children came from different schools across Adelaide and may never have reunited since that day. Patterson expressed enthusiasm about uncovering the capsule, stating that it represents a unique piece of Australian history.
While the contents of the capsule remain a mystery, Patterson hopes it will provide a fascinating glimpse into the technology and culture of the 1980s. He pointed out that during that time, landlines and payphones were prevalent, and that the first mobile phone had not yet been introduced. With advancements in technology since then, including the rise of social media and artificial intelligence, the capsule’s unveiling on July 1 promises to be a nostalgic journey.
Telstra is set to open the time capsule later this year, and the team is optimistic about reconnecting the former schoolchildren for this notable occasion.
