A sudden cold front has swept through southeast Australia, ushering in the winter chill as millions experienced an unexpectedly frosty weekend. Snowfall was reported in parts of Tasmania, while Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory faced light frost, transforming front yards into winter wonderlands.

In Melbourne, residents endured the chilliest night of 2025, with temperatures dipping to a brisk 7.4 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, in Canberra, temperatures fell to a frosty -0.1 degrees, and parts of the Victorian Alps were even colder, with Falls Creek recording -0.4 degrees and Mt Hotham slightly lower at -0.6 degrees.

The winter chill was particularly pronounced in Tasmania, where Mt Wellington registered a low of -2.7 degrees, accompanied by reports of snow on the mountain throughout the weekend. According to Weatherzone, a weather station in western Tasmania recorded snowfall of over 30mm over the weekend, signalling the season’s arrival.

Ben Lomond, Tasmania’s sole commercial ski field, received a light dusting of snow, hinting at a possible promising snow season ahead—though it may not be sufficient for skiing just yet. Despite the plunging temperatures across Victoria and the ACT, New South Wales managed to escape the cold snap, experiencing milder conditions due to warmer westerly winds.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), this brief spell of cooler autumn weather is not expected to last long. Projections from the BoM indicate a series of unusually warm days throughout April to June, with a likelihood of warmer-than-average conditions dominating much of Australia, whereas certain northern areas may witness cooler days.

With these wintery conditions giving an early taste of what’s to come, Australians are reminded to prepare for the cooler months ahead, though warmer days are on the horizon.
