Last week, a significant storm impacted Sydney’s beaches, causing damage to shorelines but also giving rise to what may be the largest wave ever surfed at Bondi Beach. Surfer Chase Hardaker, who took a day off work to catch the waves, described his excitement about surfing the impressive swell.
On Tuesday afternoon, Hardaker managed to ride a wave estimated to be around seven metres high. He vividly recalled the experience, noting the anticipation of the crowd on the cliffs, signalling the arrival of something monumental. “I was in the perfect position, so I was lucky to swing into it,” he shared.
Photographer Orlando Goldfin attempted to capture Hardaker in action amidst the spectacular spray generated by the waves. Despite the chaotic conditions, where saltwater haze blurred his lens, Goldfin succeeded in snapping a stunning shot of the surfing moment. However, he faced a challenging encounter himself when the waves crashed over him, demonstrating the unpredictable nature of the sea. Goldfin noted, “It was not really the first wave, it’s the second one that landed on my head when I was already out of breath.”
Even seasoned lifeguards at Bondi can learn tough lessons from the ocean’s might. Reflecting on his experience, Goldfin expressed, “It was a good wake-up call, as I didn’t realise Bondi could do that to me.” He emphasised the powerful energy of nature displayed that day.
Thanks to Goldfin’s photography, Hardaker can now claim to have ridden the biggest wave at Bondi. He remarked on the uniqueness of this achievement, pointing out that many seasoned surfers from Bondi and nearby Bronte may have experienced similar waves in the past, but without evidence to back their claims. As Hardaker put it, “They don’t have the evidence, so that’s the difference.”
This remarkable event not only highlights the thrill of surfing at one of Australia’s most iconic beaches but also underscores the raw power of nature and the excitement it brings to adrenaline seekers.
