Two drivers are currently in custody following a tragic incident in Sydney’s Royal National Park, where a 20-year-old passenger lost his life after becoming trapped in a submerged vehicle. The accident occurred around 1:15 AM when the driver of a blue Audi allegedly lost control, resulting in the car plunging into Audley Weir.
The driver managed to escape the sinking vehicle and was subsequently taken to hospital for mandatory testing. After being treated, he was later released and placed in custody at Sutherland Police Station. Efforts to locate the passenger involved a multi-agency search, which regrettably concluded with the recovery of his body alongside the submerged car.
Simultaneously, a silver Mercedes linked to the incident has been seized by authorities, and its 18-year-old driver is also in custody. Police confirmed that there was additional information being provided by a passenger from the Mercedes at the station regarding the circumstances of the crash.
Preliminary investigations indicate that there was no contact between the two vehicles involved in the incident. Authorities have suggested that charges may be forthcoming for both drivers as inquiries continue.
As the case develops, police are urging anyone with further information to come forward. This tragic event highlights the risks associated with driving and the vital importance of road safety, particularly in challenging conditions.
