Iran has proposed to lift its control over the Strait of Hormuz in return for the US ending its sanctions and ceasing military operations. The suggestion includes postponing discussions about Iran’s nuclear programme to a later stage, as shared by two regional officials. This offer was communicated to Washington through Pakistan, although President Donald Trump is unlikely to accept it.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil and gas trade, remains a flashpoint between the US and Iran. The ongoing US blockade is crippling Iran’s ability to sell oil, which is vital for its economy. The blockade has led to significant pressures, including skyrocketing oil and gasoline prices in the lead-up to the midterm elections in the US. Additionally, the repercussions are felt globally, with rising costs for essential goods such as food and fertilisers.

As the ceasefire remains tenuous, the dynamics in the region continue to evolve. Trump’s extension of the ceasefire, originally agreed upon on April 7, indicates a temporary pause in hostilities, but a lasting resolution eludes both sides, with thousands of casualties already recorded.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, recently visited Russia for discussions with President Vladimir Putin amid ongoing mediating efforts by Pakistan to rekindle stalled negotiations with the US. Over the weekend, Araghchi engaged with officials in both Pakistan and Oman and sought regional support for a shared strategy regarding the Strait of Hormuz, including potential tolls for vessels passing through.

Meanwhile, Trump communicated that Iran has put forth a “much better” offer, insisting that any agreement would necessitate Iran’s commitment to not pursue nuclear weapons. Iran claims its nuclear ambitions are peaceful, causing further tensions over its enriched uranium stockpile.

With the war claiming thousands of lives on both sides, including battles in Lebanon and actions involving Hezbollah, the precarious state of affairs remains challenging. The recent extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah emphasizes the ongoing volatility in the region as diplomatic channels struggle to gain traction.
