A man has been shot by police during a welfare check at his residence in Doveton, a suburb in south-eastern Melbourne. The incident unfolded early today when local residents reported a dispute between a man and a woman before 9am. By the time officers arrived, both individuals had left the scene independently, leading the police to determine their presence was no longer needed.
However, around 10:30am, police returned to the same address to make contact with the man. During this second engagement, authorities allege that the 33-year-old man approached an officer aggressively holding a metal pole, which prompted police to discharge a firearm, resulting in the man’s injuries.
He was subsequently transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his upper body and is currently under police custody. A crime scene has been established, and the Professional Standards Command is overseeing an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
