Lauren Tomasi, a US correspondent, sustained an injury when a police officer fired a rubber bullet at her during live coverage of escalating protests in downtown Los Angeles. This incident occurred on the third day of unrest triggered by mass arrests of suspected undocumented immigrants.

While reporting near the metropolitan detention centre, Tomasi was struck just moments after concluding a live segment aimed at Australian audiences. The officer, positioned in the vicinity, fired from a close distance, causing Tomasi to cry out in pain. Fortunately, she was left with only soreness and no serious injuries.

The situation intensifying around her was marked by gunfire and the detonation of flashbang grenades as police enforced an escalating response to the protests. Earlier, while in the midst of demonstrators, a protester even attempted to seize her camera, illustrating the chaotic atmosphere.

Amidst the backdrop of escalating tensions, Tomasi conveyed the urgent warnings from authorities for individuals to vacate the area, noting the refusal of protesters to disperse. Despite the noise and volatility, she assured viewers of her safety at that moment, while highlighting the police’s use of rubber bullets on demonstrators.

The live broadcast was cut short for Tomasi and her crew to exit the increasingly dangerous environment safely. In response to the growing unrest, the National Guard has been deployed to assist local law enforcement.
