A 91-year-old great-grandmother, Joanna “Jopie” De Loryn, made headlines for bravely confronting a home invader in Brisbane’s Southside. On the morning of the incident, while taking out the rubbish, she interrupted a hooded thief attempting to rob her home. Remarkably, she managed to reclaim her handbag and pursued him as he fled.

De Loryn recounted her thoughts during the encounter, considering striking the intruder with her handbag despite his youth. She and her neighbours attempted to chase him down but found him too swift, suspecting he had a getaway vehicle waiting. Captured on video, Jopie energetically shouted at the fleeing thief.

The robber made off with several irreplaceable items, including her late husband’s watch and cherished wedding rings. Expressing her devastation, she lamented the loss of these sentimental belongings and expressed the fear that the thief would discard them carelessly.

Authorities are currently investigating the break-in. Jopie’s fierce response to the situation stands as a testament to her indomitable spirit, even in her advanced years.
