In a significant announcement, the federal Opposition Leader, Peter Dutton, revealed plans to redirect $2.2 billion from the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) towards the Melbourne Airport Rail Link if he is elected. Speaking in the Calwell electorate, Dutton labelled the SRL a “$200 billion pipe dream” and emphasised his commitment to making the Airport Rail, costing $11 to $13 billion, a reality. He claimed that most Victorians view the Airport Rail as crucial infrastructure, urging them to consider that voting for Anthony Albanese’s government would hinder its development.

Dutton further indicated that his Coalition government would also repurpose another $2 billion originally pledged by Albanese for the Sunshine Station upgrade, saving costs while still committing to enhance the station’s facilities. His strategy includes a scaled-back revamp of Sunshine Station, freeing up funds for other vital infrastructure projects across Victoria.

Critics of Dutton’s plan, including Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams, argue that both the Airport Rail and the SRL can be funded simultaneously, dismissing Dutton’s assertions. She contended that the Opposition Leader does not grasp the importance of either infrastructure project and accused him of attempting to undermine essential rail funding, which would ultimately leave commuters disadvantaged.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King previously allocated $2.2 billion for the SRL’s first stage, SRL East, which aims to connect Cheltenham to Box Hill via 26 kilometres of underground tunnels. Despite persistent criticism and delays surrounding the SRL, proponents like Jacinta Allan remain resolutely supportive of its potential, countering Dutton’s claims and asserting that his proposals would reduce the effectiveness of key infrastructure.

Allan stressed that cutting back on the Sunshine Station upgrade would fail to provide the necessary connections for seamless travel, especially for those needing access to regional services or the airport. As the federal election approaches, Dutton’s infrastructure focus could significantly influence voter decisions among Victorians who are keenly interested in the future of their transport networks.
