A new hotline has been established to provide information and combat misinformation regarding the toxic algal bloom affecting South Australian beaches. This initiative, which has been funded collaboratively by both the state and federal governments at a cost of $1.1 million, is accessible at 1800 774 779 and will operate daily from 9am to 5pm.

The hotline aims to educate the public about the algal bloom, offer industry support information, deliver the latest health guidance, and allow citizens to report any instances of sick or deceased wildlife affected by the bloom. Premier Peter Malinauskas emphasised the hotline’s purpose, stating it serves as a direct line for the community to engage with official government sources for reliable information.

Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt noted the importance of understanding the additional support required in response to the situation, with discussions about a summer plan currently underway. Malinauskas indicated that this plan may necessitate more taxpayer funding, a detail that has prompted calls from the opposition for its immediate release, particularly with the summer holidays approaching.

Opposition Leader Vincent Tarzia pointed out that families are starting to plan their summer getaways, highlighting the urgency of providing timely information to beachgoers. However, Malinauskas stood by the decision to announce the plan in October, assuring that this timeline was designed to provide ample notice before the onset of summer.

The algal bloom hotline is set to become operational tomorrow, marking a key step in addressing the issues posed by this environmental concern to both public health and marine life.
